A Couple of Closures
October 6th, 2008
Walking along 9 Avenue a recent afternoon, a man was startled and saddened to find that a local business which he often frequented with pleasure had closed. The man was in the mood for a 3 dollar taco and some free chips and salsa, but Burritoville was locked up and shut down.
The man’s appetites had been aroused, but where now to get lunch? The Market Diner on 11th Avenue?
Fresh fish at Sea Breeze Inc. on 9th and 40th?
Forlorn, panicked, ravenous for distraction, the man headed east to 8th Avenue. Again, the man was startled and saddened to find that a local business which he often frequented with pleasure had closed. He was in the mood for a 30 dollar strip tease in the old J-Off booth, but Gotham City was locked up and shut down.
At least the State Supreme Court of NY provided a cause, as Burritoville did not.
Well naturally! thought the man. But where now to find a cheap strip tease? The corner of 42nd & 8 Avenue?

I remember going to the Market Diner with old “Shadow” McCarthy after hitting Pier 91 for a Gloria Rothstein sponsored baseball card show. We would review the haul for the days, which usually consisted of some 1935 Goudey (4-in-1) cards and a 1952 Bowman Brooklyn Dodger or two. Those were the days.

Scores closed, the famed swankskank, ladmaggish strip club, which event is incomparably non-tragic to the sad day in the 1990s when Billy’s Topless on 6 AV in Chelsea shuttered its superb NYU co-ed boo-tay.
